Ammo sources

It's well known that lead balls are better than steel to hunt with. Here in the island is easy to find steel balls. Not so lead. Any good sources of lead balls on the internet?

You can buy a lee lead round ball mold in various sizes, I like .440. So you can make your own lead ball. You can get scrap lead from used tire shops, they usually sell it to you at a reasonable cost, or sometimes just give it to you. Always be sure to melt lead outside, as the fumes are toxic. You should find whatever you need-here. http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi

You can order round balls and steelies from a great many online catalogs. I just ordered some .440 diameter lead round balls for hiunting from www.Cabelas.com , they cost 7.99/100. Im not sure if that is a good price or not but it ain't bad for sure. I am not sure I want to cast my own and I have many other hobbies that don't gete enough time so Im not into creatin one more that also has negative health implications. If I had a secure work shed or sumthing sure but not now.
Morek,
Casting lead ball is easy, and saves you alot of money. You can get lead from tire shops very cheap or somtimes for free or from scrap yards very cheap, and you cast outside so the fumes drift away and are not harmful, casting lead indoors can be harmful to your health _________________ Catapult Kid

Morek,
If ya get a place someday where ya can cast your own .440 ball you'll find it’s a lot cheaper. You can get used wheel weights from most tire shops really cheap and some will even give you some for free. When I lived in an apartment once, I would go to the park here in town and cast ball under a picnic shelter. Just make sure ya cast out in the open air and keep water away from hot lead! I like the lee .440 round ball mold for casting my ball, as they're not as expensive as the Lyman and work just as well. As for steel ball for practice ammo, call royal bearing co. in sterling IL. When you call ask for Marty Breed, he'll sell you steel ball for $1.00 a lb. and that includes shipping. Marty is the cheapest source for steel ball that I have found. You can reach Marty at: 815-626-2539
Take Care,
Wildman
thanks for the advise and the info on the steel balls. One of these days I will get into casting lead, likely the day I finally buy a reloader so I can load for all my rifle and revolvers. Hopefully this fall. Again, thanks for the encouragement.
you can all so get lead or steel buck shot number 0 or bigger form www.Cabelas.com or use small bullets like 9mm up to 45 long colt. Just the bullet not the hold round. i have used 44mag 240 Gr. SWC BB and the work VERY well for 5-12 yards shots. _________________ let he without sin shoot the first rock

im new to the site but av been shooting for a coupkle of years and ive been looking for a mould for lead shot since i started and on lee precisions web site i can find no thing about ball bearing shots its only got bullet moulds . please correct me if im wrong
Alec,
It takes about 10 days at the most, I live in England and that’s the size that you need
It’s about the size of a 3/8 inch I think, I use them for hunting and they are very good plenty of stopping power
Where are you in England?
Alkec, like Vic says, .440 is what you want that would be a .44 caliber lead round ball suitable for downing any small game from the proper cattie. _________________ Catapult Kid

ive got a ok cattie but im just about to go fork hunting not to cut them just to find some that i can tie ito the right shape and see how the turn out.
so i should order the .440 off of lees site.
vic i wish i could mate but ive got no scanner or camera and i wouldnt have a clue how to if i did.
if i order it off of lees website will the standerd mailing cost apply even though its cum all the way to england.
ive just got back in from fork hunting i dont know what kind of tree to go for so i tied 10 sets and marked them so i could find them later they were in the following trees.
oak
silver birch and
sicamore
i dont know if there any good but oak is a strong wood so i thought it would be ok but ill just have to wait and see
Not sure about the cost, someone on this forum might know, maybe send them a e-mail and ask what they charge to send to the uk
I have dried some forks in the microwave dried ok and no splits
i only found 1 that was ready to be cut and tied a few others so the on i cut im gunna leave i n my conservitory so it dries out for winter so i can shoot a few pheasents
I have found a fishing shop which sells lead sinkers all though they are .7 inches in caliber is this too big? _________________ ^ Yeah whatever he said ^
Have ya tried any of the lead ball that you made up?
Have you tried using wheel weights. You can usually get them really cheap at tire shops.
What are you using for your heat source to melt your lead?
how do you melt ur lead (is there a specail machine, do you use a cooker? i would really appreciate this as i am intrested in trying to make some. Also how dangerous is it?
