Throwing sticks

I am wanting to try to start trying to hunting with a throwing stick. Is there a special way that I need to make one or can I just use a branch from a tree. Any advise would help.

Well as far as I know, you make one end of the stick like a handle and the other end you leave big and heavy. Obviously I'm no expert! What are you planning on hunting with it? Probably birds right?
LittleRon

I will probably target birds, and if I can throw hard enough, rabbits.

little ron,
i've used a throwing stick for years and they work well on all manner of small game. i've taken rabbits, squirrels, racoons, groundhogs, and just about anything with feathers on it with a throwing stick.
here's a pic of mine that i made from an osage branch. i drilled in about two inches deep on the one end using a 1/2 inch drill bit and then melted down a couple of wheel weights and poured them in the end to give the stick a bit more weight on the top end. i prefer a crooked branch as they seem to rotate better when thrown.
any more questions, feel free to ask.

Throw sticks or rabbit sticks

I'm not wildman but...
Two ways or more of throwing. Overhand like a knife thrown at a target with the idea of the weighted end hitting the game or side hand with the idea of the length of the stick striking through the game. There are several styles to include knobbed ones like the knobkerry or tap stick and there are styles that inlcude airfoiled ones that are simlar to boomerangs. See http://www.wildwoodsurvival.com/survival/hunting/sticks/index.html
I had an article about a old man that hunted for rabbit with a set of three tap sticks that were about 2 and a half to 3 feet long and had a large nut and bolt as a weight at one end. The entire length of the stick serves as a striking area and is capable of taking flying and running game; it is more effecient than a thrown rock. A tap stick can also be used to deliver a kill to trapped game if you don't want to waste money on ammunition. That old man had been taught by his father since even .22 ammunition was too expensive for his family but you could pick up wood and assorted nuts and bolts from around a rail yard.

the throwing stick kills by blunt force trauma. i always throw mine side arm as it increases your chances of a hit on small game. the only time i would throw a throwing stick overhand is if i was throwing it at a two-legged shit head that i don't like. i've tried throwing different lengths but found that 18-20 inches is the  most easy to control. if you want to practice for hunting, set up 1/2 gallon plastic milk jugs or two liter pop bottles. once you get good at that you can move down to the small plastic 20 oz pop bottles. i've taken just about everything in the small game caterogory with a throwing stick and they work great on feathered game.
Chip

thanks a lot wildman. im gonna make one with lead in it like yours and practice.
